Grand Central Station
One of the world's most famous train stations, New York's Grand Central Station is also among the busiest. Approximately half a million people pass through every day to board commuter trains to Westchester and Connecticut or one of the many NYC subway lines that connect here. Grand Central Station opened in 1913, giving New Yorkers their first glimpse of the Main Concourse's majestic staircase and vaulted ceiling. The edifice recently underwent a $175-million restoration, highlighted by the addition of a twinkling quality to the constellations of the zodiac painted on the ceiling. Though Grand Central Station boasts many modern amenities, including fine dining and upscale retail shops, it remains a monument to a bygone era and the romance of train travel.
