Comiskey Park, 1910-1980

Comiskey Park, located at 35th and Shields, was home to the Chicago White Sox from July 1, 1910 to September 30, 1990. Groundbreaking for the ballpark was on February 15, 1910, with a cornerstone laid on St. Patrick's Day of that same year. Seating capacity topped out at 32,000, 7,000 of which were 25-cent bleacher seats. Renamed White Sox Park in the early 1970s, nostalgiac fans still referred to the ballpark as Comiskey Park up until the last game played on September 30, 1990. In its 80 years of existence, 72,801,391 paying customers would pass through Comiskey's gates. Those numbers include not only the 1919 best-of-nine world series ticket-holders (the White Sox took the pennant that year), but also the near-hysterical fans who attended a Beatles concert in 1965, and those that would partake in the infamous 1979 Disco Demolition Night. Old Comiskey Park was razed in 1991 and its infield dirt was moved across the street to the current White Sox home, Cellular Field.
