Navy Pier

Municipal Pier, built in 1916, was constructed as an easily accessible playground. Its three tiers, jutting out 3000 feet into Lake Michigan, were designed by Charles S. Frost. In order to move Chicagoans and tourists to and from the dance hall, restaurants, theatre, art gallery and other recreational facilities it housed, a streetcar line was built on the Pier. After World War I, Municipal Pier was renamed Navy Pier in honor of the women and men who served in the Navy.
