Cubs vs. Yankees, 1938

In 1937, under the direction of Bill Veeck, the Chicago Cubs made several aesthetic improvements to Wrigley Field including planting ivy on the outfield walls and unveiling a 27-foot-high, 75-foot wide centerfield scoreboard. It featured a huge blue pennant on the side facing the corner of Waveland and Sheffield that proved to be prophetic; one year later, after a six-year hiatus, the Chicago Cubs topped the National League, despite making it there by the slimmest of margins. On September 28th, as darkness descended on the field, Gabby Hartnett walloped a two-out, ninth inning home run that lifted the Cubs to a 6-5 victory over Pittsburgh (who had led the National League for the previous 2-1/2 months). The Cubs managed to hold onto first place and win the pennant by a mere two games, but they ran into a New York Yankees juggernaut that swept the Cubs to win their third of four consecutive World Series titles.
