Waveland Avenue, 1938

For nearly 100 years, Chicago's Wrigley Field has maintained a legendary reputation for being the most fan-friendly facility not only in baseball but in all of sports. That atmosphere is not confined within the walls of the ballpark; thesurrounding streets and residential areas bustle with activity whenever the Cubs are in town and attract thousands of people that sometimes outnumber those inside the stadium. Fans flock to rooftops of nearby apartment buildings to catch a glimpse of the action on the field while many more gather on Waveland Avenue just beyond the left field wall in hopes of catching a home run ball that leaves 'the friendly confines.' In September 1998, bedlam ensued when Sammy Sosa belted both his 61st and 62nd home runs of the season onto Waveland, tying the all-time home run record Mark McGwire had set less than a week earlier.
