The Prudential Building and Beyond

The Prudential Plaza at 138 East Randolph Street was the first skyscraper built in Chicago after World War II, replacing Holabird and Root's 1930 Board of Trade as the tallest building in the city. Upon its completion in 1955, this 41-story flat-topped Indiana limestone skyscraper became one of Chicago's most visible landmarks. The building's 30-foot high Rock of Gibraltar bas relief, carved into the facade above the entrance plaza, was executed by the sculptor Alfonso Iannelli.
