Chicago White Sox vs. Los Angeles Dodgers

This photo was taken at Comiskey Park during game two of the 1959 World Series, which pitted the Los Angeles Dodgers (in the second year since moving from Brooklyn) against the Chicago White Sox. This was the same year that the flamboyant owner, Bill Veeck, pulled the last of his many stunts involving the 3'-7", 65-pound Eddie Gaedel. One of the most memorable stunts was eight years earlier when Veeck, then owner of the St. Louis Browns, used Gaedel to lead off the second game of a doubleheader against the Detroit Tigers. Dressed as Martians, Gaedel and three other midgets were dropped from the sky onto the field. They "captured" the White Sox' diminutive double-play combination of Nellie Fox and Luis Aparicio, informing the Comiskey Park crowd that they were there to help the tiny infielders in their battle against the giant earthlings. After that, Gaedel no longer participated in the owner's shenanigans, yet the innovative Veeck continued to entertain crowds with exploding scoreboards and outrageous events like the Disco Demolition Night in 1979, which incited a riot at Comiskey Park and effectively ended his career as the clown prince of baseball.
