Meow!
With their excellent hunting abilities, cats were often kept aboard ships to protect the food supplies from rodents. For this same reason, these felines began to be imported, taking up residence on farms and employed as "mousers." The first cat documented to have set foot in America came via the 'Mayflower.' Shortly after arrival, she gave birth to a litter of kittens; so there was, undoubtedly, a male aboard ship for that same journey. It is believed that today's American Shorthair breed originated from the early European arrivals that crossed the ocean, bound for the Colonies, during the eighteenth century. Having adapted to their new environment, this novel breed was larger than its forbears, and featured a denser coat of fur to better withstand the cooler climate. Renown for their exceptional predatory skills, American Shorthairs are still the kitty of choice for many farming households. Beyond their practical talents, these kitties are affectionate, intelligent and good-natured - all the makings of a wonderful family pet.
