Cubs Win!
On September 28, 1938, the day before this photograph was taken, the Cubs were playing the Pittsburg Pirates. The Cubs were half a game behind for the National League Pennant. The game, tied 5-5, was about to be called at the end of the 9th inning due to late afternoon darkness. At the bottom of the 9th inning, with two outs, Gabby Hartnett stepped up to bat, and hit a home run. The field was swamped with joyous fans, almost preventing Hartnett from rounding the bases. Now behind by half a game, the Pittsburgh Pirates were thoroughly shaken and easily defeated by the Cubs in next day's game, September 29, 1938. The field was again engulfed with fans, exuberant at their team's winning streak. The Cubs captured the pennant a few days later. Although the team would eventually lose the World Series to the New York Yankees, Cubs fans would never forget the exhilarating moments of victory when their team was truly number one.
