Hippocrates, and doctors for centuries, assessed a patient's cardiac health by simply placing an ear on the patient's chest. In 1816, French physician Rene Laennec was uncomfortable performing this procedure on a young female patient. He remembered something he had once experienced: "...if you place your ear against one end of a wood beam, the scratch of the pin at the other end is distinctly audible." Laennec rolled a sheet of paper, placed it on the woman's chest and clearly heard the sounds of her heart and lungs. The first stethoscope would be a wooden tube, popularized by the1820s, and modified in 1851 to feature two earpieces. Although medical science becomes more sophisticated almost every day, the use of a stethoscope is still a standard procedure.
