The Four Horsemen

"Outlined against a blue gray October sky, the Four Horsemen rode again. In dramatic lore they are known as famine, pestilence, destruction and death. These are only aliases. Their real names are Stuhldreher, Miller, Crowley and Layden." With that immortal series of sentences penned after Notre Dame's 13-7 victory over Army on October 18, 1924, sportswriter Grantland Rice of the New York Herald Tribune elevated Fighting Irish football players Harry Stuhldreher, Don Miller, Jim Crowley and Elmer Layden to legendary status. Upon the team's return to South Bend after the game, a student publicity aide to Coach Knute Rockne posed the foursome on horseback, and soon one of the most famous photographs in sports history was circulated over the national wire services.
