Dogs & Cats
Because both cats and dogs are predatory, territorial, and often seek the same prey in the wild, they are natural rivals. But in a domestic setting, the saying "fighting like cats and dogs" loses some of its bite. Approximately 40 percent of all dog owners have a cat in the home as well, and those who have cultivated warm interspecies relationships have done so gradually. At first, keeping cats and dogs apart with a gate, glass door or other barrier allows the new roommates to see and smell without physical contact. Once they're used to one another's presence, putting them together for short periods of time (under close supervision, of course) speeds up the "getting to know you" period. In no time, cats and dogs are more than happy to overlook their differences and welcome a loyal friend and companion into their lives.
