Kennedy Expressway at O'Hare

Chicago O'Hare International Airport, one of the busiest airports in the world, is accessible via the Rapid Transit "Blue Line," which runs alongside the Kennedy Expressway. O'Hare uses the letters ORD on its baggage tags. ORD stands for Orchard Place Airport, the airport's original name. Orchard Place Airport was used during World War II as a test field in conjunction with the Douglas Aircraft Company plant, located on the 1000 acres surrounding the airport. At that time, the runway was only large enough to accommodate the 4-engine transport planes the Douglas Aircraft Company was building. Although the airport's name was officially changed after World War II to honor Lieutenant Commander Edward H. "Butch" O'Hare, who received the 1st Congressional Medal of Honor awarded to a US Navy serviceman during the war, the ORD stamp has remained to this day.
