Wings of Gold on State

During World War II, buses and streetcars were painted with various patriotic slogans as a reminder for people to buy war bonds and support the war effort. The "Wings of Gold" on this particular streetcar are an honor that Navy Pilots strive to achieve. The sailors in this photograph are taking advantage of the fact that men and women in uniform were permitted to ride public transportation free-of-charge for the duration of the war.
