1906 World Series/ Cubs vs. Sox

Baseball fans of the 1906 season were astounded when the 116-win Chicago Cubs would be playing the "Hitless Wonders" Chicago White Sox in the World Series. These classic crosstown rivals are seen here during Game 3 of that series, being played at the West Side Grounds once located at Wood and Polk Streets. Regardless of the home field advantage, the Cubs would falter and lose this game 3-0 under Sox starter Big Ed Walsh who gave up a mere two hits. The Cubs went on to lose the 1906 Series four to two. It was the first of three consecutive World Series appearances for the Cubs, who did take title from the Tigers in both 1907 and 1908. Since moving to Wrigley Field in 1918, the Cubs have played for the championship only six times, losing every attempt. But a spirit of hope lives on in the team and its followers, who compose one of the most loyal fanbases in all of sports.
