Crosstown Rivals

Six years after they met in the 1906 World Series and one day after the New York Giants and the Boston Red Sox opened the 1912 Fall Classic, crosstown rivals the Chicago White Sox and the Chicago Cubs began their own postseason showdown called the City Series. The best-of-seven tournament actually lasted eight games as pitchers Jimmy Lavender of the Cubs and Ed Walsh of the Sox dueled to a scoreless tie in the opener. The Cubs went on to win the next three games before losing three straight to set up the climactic seventh game on Friday, October 18. The Sox scored three runs in each of the first two innings on their way to a 16-0 rout that featured another stellar pitching performance from Walsh, who held the Cubs hitless in the final four frames. Sox catcher Ray Schalk later called it the greatest game he ever caught.
