Lorain Lighthouse on Lake Erie
Port of Lorain, Ohio
Standing as structural testaments to the maritime history of the Great Lakes, lighthouses bring to mind the courage of sailors caught in tempestuous waters, of duty-bound lightkeepers living in isolation, of heroic rescues and, too, a sense of serenity. Without these splendid icons, the nation's economic strides during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries certainly would have suffered. The stately Lorain Light on Lake Erie may no longer serve as a navigational tool, but its mere presence and seeming vulnerability speak well of past fortitude. This light is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
