On the Eastern Shore

The Algoma Pierhead Light on Lake Michigan Kewaunee County, Wisconsin Wisconsin's rich maritime history is tied to the French fur trade, the logging industry, and the early settlement of predominantly German, Scandinavian, and Irish immigrants. These pioneers began to arrive by boat in the 1830s and 1840s without the benefit of lighthouses to guide them through the treacherous waters of Lake Michigan's west side. There was only one lighthouse at the time, built in 1837 and located at the entrance of Green Bay. With shallow shoals and reefs, few inlets, rocky shores and limited ports along Wisconsin's east shore, the waters were not easy to navigate and took its toll on lives, ships and cargo. By the end of the nineteenth century, the majority of Wisconsin's lighthouses had been built. Replaced in 1932, the original Algoma Pierhead Light shown here was built in 1893 to mark the entrance to Algoma Harbor, just south of Door County.
