Summer at the Shore

Summer at the Shore

As far back as 1880, families have journeyed to Michigan towns and lakeside retreats in search of a respite from summer's heat and the congestion of an urban life. Arriving via steamer or rail, they discovered the natural beauty and serenity that Michiganders had found for themselves. Packing little and leaving toys behind, children relied upon their own instincts and natural curiousity for entertainment. Feeling lakewater lapping at toes, satin-like sand running through fingers, finding fossils and gem-like stones along the shore, and hearing the rhythmic rush of waves gave children the thrill of discovery. The lure of these simple appreciations have brought generation upon generation returning year after year to the eastern shores of Lake Michigan. With its unprecedented shoreline of sandy dunes, Michiganders remain the custodians of this 200-mile national treasure.
